Grounding and Lightning Protection Systems

Grounding and Lightning Protection Systems (Design, Implementation, Measurement, Reporting)

The foundation of safety in electrical installations is correct grounding and effective lightning protection infrastructure. These systems are not merely a matter of "regulations," but critical engineering applications that directly protect human life, equipment, and operational continuity. Incorrect design or inadequate implementation increases the risk of leakage current, equipment failures, fire hazards, and power outages. 2G Construction & Energy plans, implements, and manages the measurement and reporting processes for end-to-end grounding and lightning protection systems in various scales, from industrial facilities to construction sites, transformer substations to solar/wind power projects.

What is Grounding? Why is it Vital?

Grounding is a protection method that ensures the leakage current generated during a fault is safely transmitted to the ground through the lowest impedance path, keeping touch voltage and step voltage at safe levels. The aim is... The purpose of grounding is to protect people from electric shock, to ensure the correct functioning of protective elements (fuses, switches, relays), and to prevent damage to sensitive equipment.

For the correct functioning of a grounding system:

The grounding resistance must meet the target values,

Equipotential busbar installation must be carried out,

The neutral-protective conductor arrangement must be correctly designed,

Corrosion and mechanical resistance must be selected appropriately for the site,

A regular measurement and periodic inspection plan must be implemented.

What is Lightning Protection? (Lightning Rod / LPS)

Lightning strikes can cause direct damage (fire, equipment damage) and indirect damage (sudden voltage surges, electronic system failures). Lightning protection systems are evaluated under two main headings:

  1. External Lightning Protection System (LPS): Captures lightning strikes in a controlled manner and transfers the energy to the ground via down conductors and a grounding network. (Lightning rod/insulated down conductor/mesh system, etc.)

Internal Lightning Protection – Surge Protection (SPD): Protects switchboards, drives, inverters, PLCs, cameras, and IT systems by limiting sudden voltage surges from the grid or lightning induction.

2G Construction & Energy prioritizes not only lightning rod installation but also an LPS + SPD + equipotential equalization approach compatible with the entire electrical infrastructure of the facility.

    Our Scope of Services

    1) Survey, Risk Analysis, and Project Design

Not every building or facility has the same risk profile. A project is created considering roof geometry, building height, environmental conditions, intended use (industry, warehouse, construction site, power plant), and existing infrastructure.

3) Lightning Protection (Lightning Rods / Lightning Arresters / Down Conductors)

The purpose of an external lightning protection system is to carry lightning current to the ground without damaging the structure.

Installation includes:

Application of lightning arrester/conductor mesh

Down conductor routing plan and fixings

Test terminals and control points

Grounding connection and ring system integration.

4) Surge Protection (Surge Arrester/SPD) Integration

Most electronic equipment is affected by lightning surges or network switching. Therefore, selecting the correct class of SPD and making the correct connection at the panel level is critical.

At this stage:

SPD tiering for main and sub-panels (according to Type 1/Type 2/Type 3 requirements)

Optimization of cable length and connection arrangement

Grounding and busbar connection compatibility

Additional protection solutions for sensitive loads
are planned and implemented.

5) Measurement, Testing, and Reporting

Grounding and lightning protection systems don't end with "installation"; they are measured and reported. Measurements are the most concrete data showing that the system is actually providing protection.

Services include:

Grounding resistance measurement

Continuity checks and connection verification

Equipotential bond checks

Inspection of lightning protection system control points

Measurement reports and maintenance recommendations
are provided.

6) Periodic Maintenance and Operation

Over time, connections may loosen, corrosion may increase, and site conditions may change. Periodic maintenance ensures the sustainability of operational safety.

Maintenance includes:

Checking connection points and examining tightness and corrosion

Repeating grounding measurements at specific intervals

Checking lightning rod downline connections and fixings

SPD status indicators and panel checks

Where do we apply this?

Switchyards and transformer facilities

HV/MV/LV power transmission line connection points

Solar/Wind power plant sites (inverters, transformers, field panels, metal structures)

Industrial facilities, warehouses, shopping malls and business centers

Construction sites and temporary energy infrastructures

Camera, barrier, automation and communication infrastructures

Frequently Asked Questions

What should the grounding value be in ohms?
The target value varies depending on the facility type, protection scheme, soil structure, and standards. The correct approach is to design and verify with measurements according to the site.

Is a lightning rod alone sufficient?
No. External lightning protection (LPS) captures lightning and directs it to the ground; however, in most projects, surge arresters (SPDs) and equipotential bonding are also required to protect electronic systems.

How often should measurements be taken?
The period is determined according to the risk and operating conditions of the facility. Regular checks and reporting are recommended for critical facilities.
